Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh's Indore has added yet another accolade to its name. After being celebrated for its achievements in cleanliness and as a Smart City, Indore has now been internationally recognised as a 'Wetland City.'

This global status was granted based on the city’s efforts in preserving Ramsar-certified wetlands. The award was presented during a ceremony at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, by Dr Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands.

It was received on behalf of India by Dr Sujit Kumar Bajpayee, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Indore Mayor congratulates citizens

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav expressed pride in this global achievement. He said, “It gives me immense pleasure to announce that 2 Indian cities have been honored with this title, and Indore is one of them. It is a matter of great pride that Indore is now listed as a Wetland City in the records of the United Nations.”

The mayor added that this recognition is a result of dedicated conservation efforts at Ramsar-certified wetlands like Sirpur and Yashwant Sagar.

Congratulating the citizens, he urged them to continue their commitment towards environmental preservation. “Let us all work together to protect these natural treasures and keep Indore at the forefront of environmental progress,” he said.

This international honour not only highlights Indore’s leadership in India but also positions it as a global model for environmental awareness and wetland conservation.
