Alirajpur (Madhya Pradesh): Liquor shops throughout Alirajpur district remained closed on Wednesday following a vigorous campaign led by Madhya Pradesh Adivasi Vikas Parishad (AVP) state vice president Mahesh Patel on Tuesday.

The campaign aimed to ban alcohol sales and submitted a memorandum to tehsildar, demanding immediate action to shut down these establishments.

Patel announced that 10,000 sticks would be distributed to youth of tribal community, along with another 10,000 for women, to support their efforts in campaign. The tribal society organised sit-in protests in front of liquor shops across districts, culminating in a significant demonstration at 4 pm when a memorandum was submitted.

Demonstrations took place in various locations, including Nanpur, Chhakatla, Udaipur and Kattiwada, where tribal youth voiced their demands. Patel actively participated in Sejawada protest, handing over the memorandum to Tehsildar Jitendra Singh Tomar, urging the closure of both Indian and foreign liquor shops in scheduled areas.

Patel emphasised the need for action similar to the recent liquor ban in Ujjain and other religious sites, stressing that sale of alcohol is harmful to community's well-being. He warned that if liquor shops are not closed, the tribal society would escalate their protests, determined to protect their community from the negative impacts of alcohol.
