Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Awareness about epilepsy is increasing, and more people are now seeking proper treatment instead of relying on superstitions. Earlier, many patients avoided hospitals due to misconceptions, but now around 400 epilepsy patients visit MY Hospital every month for treatment.

On the eve of International Epilepsy Day, the doctors said that early diagnosis and timely treatment can greatly improve recovery chances. “Epilepsy can affect people of any age. In elderly individuals, it is often caused by paralysis or brain tumours. In young adults (20-30 years), it is mostly due to genetic factors.

In children, the condition can develop due to brain injuries at birth or disabilities,” neurologist Dr Archana Verma said. She added that to make treatment easier, MY Hospital now provides a one-month supply of medicines instead of weekly doses, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits. Meanwhile, neurologist Dr Monica Porwal stated that there are two main types of epilepsy.“

Generalised epilepsy affects the entire brain, causing unconsciousness. Focal epilepsy affects specific brain areas, leading to changes in smell, taste, body movements, dizziness, and temporary vision or hearing loss,’ Dr Porwal added. To manage epilepsy better, doctors advise patients to take medicines regularly, maintain a healthy lifestyle, get enough sleep, exercise daily, and manage stress and anxiety.
