Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore’s innovative zero-waste model has been recognized as exemplary by Rupa Mishra, joint secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. During her visit to the city on Saturday, she praised Indore’s efforts in waste segregation and zero-waste management, calling it a benchmark for other urban centres across the country.

Accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma, Mishra inspected various waste management facilities in Ward 47, known as the city’s zero-waste ward. The facilities included the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), where dry waste such as plastic, paper, and metals is segregated and recycled.

She also visited the RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Center, which raises public awareness about waste reduction and recycling practices. Additionally, she observed the plastic waste processing plant, which converts discarded plastic into reusable products, thereby reducing pollution.

Mishra also toured the wet waste processing unit, where organic waste from households and markets is transformed into eco-friendly compost. The operational details and innovations of these facilities were explained to Mishra.

Mishra lauded the efforts of the Indore Municipal Corporation emphasising that the zero-waste model demonstrates technical excellence and strong citizen participation. She recommended documenting this success story to share with other cities as a replicable model for achieving sustainable urban development.
