Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a youth who was defrauding passengers by showing fake UPI payment confirmations through a fake app at the city railway station.

The accused would approach travellers pretending to be in distress, offer to make online payments in exchange for cash and flee with the money after showing forged transaction screenshots.

According to GRP staff, the first incident came to light on July 2 when a candidate who had come to Indore Railway Station after attending the Agniveer recruitment exam was approached near the ticket counter.

The accused requested Rs 500 in cash and offered to pay digitally. He scanned the complainant’s QR code using a fake UPI app that mimicked a genuine transaction screenshot. Without verifying the receipt, the victim handed over the cash. Upon checking later, he realised no money was credited and the accused had already fled.

A similar incident occurred on June 29, when Sanjay, a resident of Mhow waiting for his train, was duped of Rs 1k in the same manner. Based on CCTV footage from platform number 4 and technical analysis, the GRP identified and nabbed accused Divya Alawa of SAF Police Line, Dhar.

He was caught on the same platform in a suspicious condition. The GRP also recovered cash from his possession. Two separate cases have been registered against the accused under section 318(4) of the BNS and further investigation is underway.
