Indore: World record; City doctor performs 53 obesity operations in 13 hours

Indore: Bariatric and robotic surgeon Dr Mohit Bhandari created a new world record by performing 53 bariatric surgeries in a short span of 13 hours.  “At 6am on May 1, my team and I had started the first surgery and the chain continued and stopped at 7pm after completing 53 successful bariatric operations,” Bhandari said.  “All these operations were telecasted live internationally and number of doctors and other persons watched this live telecast.”

Till now, no such feat of performing so many surgeries in such a short period has been observed. The Book of World record has also included this achievement into its record book and Mohak Bariatric and Robotic Centre has submitted its claim into the Guinness Book of World Record. Bhandari has the credit of being the youngest bariatric surgeon of the county who has performed more than 3,500 bariatric and 250 robotic surgeries.

Bhandari performs all modalities of bariatric surgery such as Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bypass, Mini Gastric Bypass and by December 2018 he has performed more than 11,000 bariatric operations which is the highest in Asia pacific and the count is still on. In 2012, Bhandari performed the 1st documented obesity surgery in India operating on an Asian woman weighing 350kg. The record of performing bariatric surgery on a 6-year-old obese boy in 2013 is also on his name.

In the year 2015, Bhandari’s name found place in the LIMCA book of records when he performed 25 bariatric surgeries in only 11 hours. He has also preformed successful surgery on a patient form Mauritius weighing 410 kg. He has also been invited to operate in various countries such as Germany, Belgium, China, Australia etc all these surgeries that he performed in these countries were also live telecasted and witnessed by number of viewers.

Bhandari said that he has never performed any surgery in haste nor will he do so in future. “On May 1 also, each and every patient taken for surgery was thoroughly examined for his surgical fitness and every care and precaution has been observe while performing these surgeries.”  “Not a single surgery was performed in haste and it has never been his objective to create a record since all these patients were waiting for the surgeries and Mohak Bariatric and Robotic Centre has adequate equipment, infra and a dexterous team to perform these many surgeries in a day and since he felt that he was competent enough to complete these surgeries he booked all these 53 patients for operation.”  He also said that all these patients have recovered and discharged from the hospital.
