Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The geotechnical survey for the Indore-Ujjain Metro project has been awarded to Jaipur-based company CEG Test House and Research Centre Pvt Ltd. This firm has previously worked on prestigious infrastructure projects like the Mumbai Metro, New Delhi railway station, and Tughlakabad and will now play a vital role in assessing soil conditions along the proposed Metro route.

The survey is being conducted to test soil strength and examine ground stability for the Metro’s tracks and pillars. The company will carry out excavations at multiple locations along the route to analyze soil quality and prepare a detailed technical report. This report will then be submitted to the Metro corporation and will form the basis for structural and engineering decisions in the next phase.

According to Metro officials, the Indore-Ujjain Metro corridor will be a combination of elevated and underground segments. A majority of the route will be elevated, with pillars constructed along road dividers to reduce the impact on vehicular traffic. In Ujjain, however, the stretch from Nanakheda to the railway station will be underground. The Detailed Project Report (DPR), currently being prepared, will determine the final proportion of elevated versus underground routes.

The responsibility for preparing the DPR has been given to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This comprehensive report, expected to be ready by July or August, will include all major components of the project such as route design, cost estimates, funding sources, station locations, depots, underground sections and parking arrangements. The total estimated cost of the project is approximately Rs 10,000 crore.

The proposed route will span around 47 kilometres and include eight stations. The first station is proposed near Luv Kush Square in Indore, while the last station will be close to Mahakal Lok in Ujjain. Approximately 70% of the route will  run along the central road median, a move aimed at minimizing disruption to existing traffic flow.
