Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A woman was allegedly duped of nearly ₹1.3 lakh in an online fraud scam in the Aerodrome area of Indore. The accused fraudster posed as an LIC employee and tricked her into clicking a malicious link.
According to the Aerodrome police, Pinky Rathore, a resident of Chhota Bagarda, received a phone call on Monday evening. The caller identified himself as an employee of the LIC head office located in Bhopal and claimed that a pending payment refund needed to be processed.
The accused sent the woman a link labelled 'Quick.' As soon as Pinky clicked on it, a sum of ₹1.29 lakh was debited from her account across approximately five separate transactions. Immediately thereafter, the accused's mobile phone went off.
Complaint Filed via Cyber Helpline; FIR Registered
Upon realising that she had been duped, the woman immediately lodged a complaint with her bank's toll-free helpline and the cyber helpline.
On Tuesday, the police registered a case against the unidentified caller and a specific account holder involved in the incident.
Additional DCP of the Crime Branch has appealed to the public not to click on any unknown or suspicious links. He warned that fraudsters are utilising precisely these methods—fake calls and malicious links—to drain money from people's bank accounts.
IPO Scam
Earlier, a 71-year-old retired bank employee was allegedly defrauded of roughly ₹17.37 lakh after being lured by claims of large stock market and initial public offering (IPO) profits within the boundaries of the Sanyogitaganj police station in Indore.
The victim was duped by a plan that started with a deceptive social media advertisement, according to the police. He installed the 5 Paisa Capital app after clicking on an advertisement on March 2.
The victim transferred Rs. 17,07,594 for shares and IPO investments since they thought the platform was genuine.
When the victim tried to withdraw his money but was unsuccessful, the fraud was discovered. The suspects disabled his number and stopped answering when he attempted to get in touch with them.
