Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Charging mobile phones is a basic necessity of life. Regular use of mobile phones requires regular charging of the device. The MP West Zone Electrical Distribution Company has revealed that about Rs 5-6 crore is spent monthly for charging mobile phones in the district. The small phones kept in our pockets—even those that have smaller batteries—consume electricity 3-4 times a day, making it about 120 times a month, costing around Rs 12-15 rupees a month.

Among the 15 districts of Malwa and Nemar, Indore district has the maximum number of mobile users with an estimated 30 lakh daily mobile users.

Amit Tomar, managing director, MP West Zone Electrical Distribution Company, said, “Providing electricity is a continuous round-the-clock service. At present, mobiles are also among the major daily requirements of common people. Therefore, the use of mobiles per person and per family is increasing and electricity expenditure on this has also become higher than before.”

At present, a charger ranging from 25-20 watts is used to charge a battery of 6,500 to 7,000 mAH. As the use of the Internet is increasing with the world shifting to online platforms, the requirement of charging the phones has also increased, in turn increasing the use of electricity. Moreover, the electricity cost has increased comparatively. It is estimated that there are at least 4-5 mobile phones used by each household in the district. In this way, the cost of electricity that each household pays is between Rs 20-25 per month. There are about 38 lakh houses and families in MP which fall under the West Zone, from which it can be estimated that at least 1.5 crore mobiles are being charged daily, leading to a monthly expense of around Rs 5-6 crore.
