Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, who is currently on a three-day visit to Israel representing India, met Israel’s finance minister to discuss key issues, including India-Israel relations, global terrorism, cleanliness and urban development.
The Mayor introduced himself by saying that he is the first person of the cleanest city in India. “Indore, with a population of around 4 million, has directly elected me as Mayor. I extended greetings to Israel from their side.”
He said, "India and Israel share deep historical and cultural ties. The way Israel has re-established itself after facing some of the toughest circumstances is truly inspiring for the world."
Clear Stand on Terrorism: "We Must Fight Ideology, Not Religion"
During his discussion with Israel's Finance Minister, Mayor Bhargav raised a pertinent question regarding global terrorism.
He said, "Recently, in India’s Pahalgam region, people were targeted and killed on religious grounds. But the truth is, terrorism has no religion. You mentioned that wars may end someday, but what about terrorist ideology? That thinking can always resurface. In your view, what is the long-term and ultimate solution to this global issue?"
In response, the Israeli Finance Minister appreciated Mayor’s question and said, "India is a key partner for us. I’ve had many positive discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar. India deeply understands the pain of terrorism. We are ready to cooperate with you."
Discussion on Cleanliness and Smart City Innovations
Mayor Bhargav praised Israel's Smart City model and emphasised mutual learning between the two nations.
"We have a robust waste management system that we can share with Israeli municipalities. Likewise, Israel’s technological expertise and innovations can be highly beneficial for us."
On this occasion, the Israeli Finance Minister remarked, "It is a matter of pride to receive such ideas from cities like Indore. I would bring your questions to the attention of our senior leadership."
