Bhopal/Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A man and his family has been booked for harassing his wife for dowry. After five years of harassment, the woman finally mustered the courage and approached Indore District Court.
The woman, in her complaint, alleged harassment by the in-laws from the very first day after the wedding, when they demanded her to bring Rs 2 lakh dowry. The torture intensified after her family could not arrange the amount. The victim accused her mother-in-law of constantly raising doubts on her character and even seeking the DNA test of her stillborn.
The court began its hearing into the matter on January 18 and ordered the Banganga police station to file an FIR and take the accused into custody. A case has been registered under domestic violence and the court ordered an investigation report from the Women and Child Development Department.

According to information, the victim woman, a resident of the Banganga area of Indore, was married to a man from Bhopal in 2019. The woman alleged that since the day of their marriage, her mother-in-law constantly doubted her character and accused her of cheating. Moreover, the family demanded a dowry of Rs 2 lakh. Soon, the victim conceived and was pregnant. Due to the constant harassment and character assassination, the woman suffered a miscarriage.
Next year, the woman conceived another baby and was pregnant yet again. This time, unfortunately, the baby was stillborn. Instead of consoling the woman, her mother-in-law demanded a DNA test and accused her of carrying another man's child. Even after all this, the atrocities did not stop. She was beaten continually and was harassed time and time again. In the interim, the victim woman got pregnant once again and gave birth to a girl. She was harassed on the gender of the baby too. The victim's in-laws, disappointed with a girl child, sent the victim woman back to her maternal home, where she is currently residing.
Court Hearing
The woman was thrown out of her house in April 2024 but did not file any complaint. Mustering courage, the woman finally filed a case at the Indore District and Sessions court on January 18. The hearing began, and all the evidence was presented before the court. The Indore District Court also received a confidential investigation report from the Women and Child Development Department following the petition filed by the victim.
Assessing the evidence, a case has been registered against the husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law under Section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. Based on the preliminary findings, a notice has been issued, as prima facie evidence of domestic violence has been identified. Additionally, a complaint has been filed at the Banganga police station.
