Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore is shining bright—not just in cleanliness but also in green energy production.

With a 20 per cent increase in solar electricity generation this summer, the city is leading the state in solar panel installations and output.

Currently, solar panels in the city are generating power for nearly 13 hours a day, courtesy longer and more intense sunlight. In April, the city is receiving about 12 hours and 50 minutes of sunlight, which is expected to rise to about 13.5 hours by May, boosting output even further.

There are over 15,250 rooftop solar panel installations across Indore with a combined production capacity of 110 MW. Within Malwa-Nimar region, the number climbs to 28,600 installations with a total rooftop solar net meter capacity exceeding 230 MW.

With peak electricity generation being recorded between 11 am and 4 pm, a typical household with a 3 KW solar setup is producing 15 to 17 units of electricity daily—contributing to a collective daily production of over 2.5 lakh units citywide.

This adds up to around 80 lakh units per month, translating to a market value of more than Rs 5 crore for the electricity generated in Indore alone. At the West Discom level, the monthly value crosses Rs 9 crore.

Under PM Suryaghar Yojana, consumers can receive up to Rs 78,000 in subsidies for solar panel installations up to 3 KW. The subsidy, credited directly to consumer accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), is being disbursed within one to 1.25 months, making it an attractive option for many.
