Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A couple from Mumbai was trapped beneath the wheels of a speeding dumper of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) for nearly half an hour after it hit their scooter while taking a turn at Jinsi Square under Malharganj police station limits on Sunday.
After the accident, the couple got stuck under the front wheels of the dumper along with their scooter. They suffered severe leg injuries. Locals attempted to help, but the couple was so badly stuck beneath the wheels that rescuing them became difficult.
A car jack was brought from a nearby garage to lift the dumper, and the couple was eventually rescued. They were rushed to the hospital, where their condition is said to be critical. The driver of the dumper fled the scene following the accident.
According to the police, the injured couple has been identified as Tejas Gupta (32) and Reenal Gupta (30), residents of Mumbai, who had come to Shikshak Nagar.
The dumper was turning from Jinsi Square toward Kila Maidan when it struck the couple’s scooter from behind. The impact caused the couple and their scooter to get trapped under the dumper’s front wheels. Their legs were so severely caught under the vehicle that it was difficult to free them. Locals and passersby brought jacks from nearby garages, lifted the dumper and rescued the couple along with their scooter. The couple sustained serious leg fractures and was rushed to the hospital. Although there was no external bleeding, their condition remains critical, and they are currently being treated in the ICU. Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the errant driver.
Both injured are company secretaries
Family members said that Tejas and Reenal live in Mumbai and both work as company secretaries. Reenal’s maternal home is in Shikshak Nagar. The couple, married about 2.5 years ago, had come to Indore for a holiday. They had gone out to shop for clothes when the accident occurred.
Dumper had no number plate
The IMC dumper involved in the accident had no number plate on either the front or rear. On Sundays, a weekly market is also held in the Jinsi area, causing heavy congestion on Subhash Marg. Residents said that the width of the square is already narrow. Since the IMC workshop is nearby, dumpers pass through the area frequently. In addition, e-rickshaw drivers often park at the square, further narrowing the road and increasing the risk of accidents.
