IIT Indore Hosts Two-Day Workshop On Narmada River Basin Management; Discussion On Ecological Concerns, Erosion Held

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A two-day workshop on "Integrated Approaches to Narmada River Basin Management" was organised by the Centre for Narmada River Basin Management Studies at the Indian Institute of Technology Indore on 16th–17th January 2025.

The workshop brought together 48 participants from various organisations across Madhya Pradesh.

The event was part of an ongoing study on the Condition Assessment and Management Plan (CAMP) for the Narmada River Basin, a project initiated by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The study is being jointly led by IIT Indore and IIT Gandhinagar, with monitoring by Ganga at IIT Kanpur.

During the workshop, several important issues related to river management were discussed, including the need to plant trees along the river banks to prevent soil erosion, control silt in reservoirs, and protect water quality.

Topics also covered the river’s biodiversity, ecological concerns, river morphology, erosion, sedimentation, and strategies to reduce sedimentation in river basins.

Ashish Dutta, Member-Power, NCA, highlighted the importance of academic involvement in sustainable river management, while Prof. Suhas Joshi, Director IIT Indore, emphasized the need to engage students and faculty from various departments in these efforts. Prof. Manish Kumar Goyal, Convener Narmada, underscored the workshop’s goal of fostering collaboration and using advanced tools for river basin management.
