Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a coordinated demonstration led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and central labour organisations, effigies of US President Donald Trump were set ablaze in multiple villages across Indore district.
The protest, which began with a march from Gandhi Hall to the divisional commissioner’s office, saw activists burn Trump’s posters and submit two separate memoranda.
The demonstrators, led by Ram Swaroop Mantri, Arun Chauhan, Rudrapal Yadav, Bablu Jadhav, and Pramod Namdev, raised slogans such as “Multinational companies, quit India” and “Withdraw labour codes,” opposing US-India trade agreements and condemning America’s 50% tariff on Indian goods.
They urged the Indian government to resist US pressure, protect the food security of 1.46 billion citizens, and address mismanagement in Indore’s major grain markets.
Protesters demanded immediate payment of pending dues to farmers, halting land acquisition without consent, repairing RO water facilities, ending illegal parking and extortion in markets, and ensuring proper weighing systems during the Rabi season.
Farmers protested against Trump in about 40 districts of the state and effigies of the US President were burnt at many places.
Effigy burnings were reported from over two dozen locations, including Baleda, Takun Nainod, Gandhinagar, Depalpur, Sanwer, Simrol, and Bijalpur.
Farmer leaders said, "The high duty announced by Trump on goods imported from India is completely against the interests of Indian farmers and labourers. Trump wants to sell American goods in India by any means, while he wants to stop exports from India to his country. Such unfair deals should not happen at the international level."
On August 6, Trump announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on all Indian imports, on top of an existing 25 per cent duty, taking the total to 50 per cent from August 27. The White House said the measure responds to India's continued purchase of Russian oil.
