Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A 22-year-old BCom student was duped of Rs 10K by conman posing as crime branch officer for watching pornographic material in Rajendra Nagar area, an official said on Friday.

Additional DCP Alok Kumar Sharma said that one Rahul Yadav, a resident of Shubham Residency, lodged a complaint with Rajendra Nagar police station cyber desk stating that he received a call on December 11 from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself to be a police official from Bhopal Crime branch and told him that they got information from his browser data history that he watched pornographic materials which is a crime.

A team has been sent to his residence to arrest him and if he wants to evade arrest, he could compromise by paying a file charge of Rs 10,000. The conmen sent a QR code on the victim's WhatsApp number and he sent Rs 10,000 in six transactions. Later, the victim again got calls from the same number and the caller again threatened him with arrest. The conman told him that if he wanted to dispose of the case, he should send him Rs 40,000. The victim sensed something fishy and informed police about the incident.

The police launched a probe and froze the bank account.  Additional DCP Alok Kumar Sharma appealed to people that there is no such thing as digital arrest so the people should not be scared after receiving phone calls from unidentified people posing as police, CBI or RBI officers. The callers have duped many people of crores of rupees in the city so far, so the people need to be aware of such fraud calls.
