Indore: A city- based mechanic, who was arrested for locking his wife’s genitals, has been awarded 10 years imprisonment.
Additional district judge AK Singh while handing down the sentence to Idrish Nagar resident Sohanlal Chouhan ( 40) on Friday said that it was a heinous crime against woman.
The incident had come to light when Chouhan’s wife attempted suicide by consuming some poisonous substance and was rushed to hospital on July 16 last year. To drain out the poisonous substance when a doctor tried to put urine tube, the doctor found the woman’s genitals locked.
She told the doctor and police that her husband had locked her genitals and that he only had the key. The lock could be opened only after Chouhan was arrested and the key was recovered from him.
In her statement to Sanyogitaganj police, the victim said that her husband had drilled holes on either side of her genitals in 2008 after drugging her and put a small lock on it.
He did that to prevent her from doing sex with others. Before leaving for work, Chouhan would insert a small lock in the holes, keeping the key under his socks. Police had seized two sets of locks and keys apart from the needle used to make the holes.
On her suicide attempt, the mother of five children said that Chouhan tried to steal modesty of her eldest daughter, which she could not accept and made an attempt to end her life. After investigation, the police produced chargesheet in the court and the trial began on January 2.
As many as 14 witnesses, including the doctors and nurses, who attended the victim in the hospital, were produced in the court. During the trial, the victim and her children, however, turned hostile and rubbished charges leveled by the police.
But, the court on the basis of strong evidence and statements of the doctor, nurses and the police found Chouhan guilty. The judge awarded him 10 years imprisonment under Section 326 and one year imprisonment under Section 498A.
