They administer radiation therapy at the hospital

Indore: A shocking incident of ward boys administering radiation therapy to patients has come to light. The incident occurred at city’s Cancer Hospital, an affiliate of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, where a ward boy was video- graphed while giving therapy treatment to patient.

A hospital insider says these ward boys were given training by the doctors to discharge their duty in their absence. They use to give therapy after 3 pm, when the doctors and technicians leave for the day.

Recklessness of these doctors is quite evident from the fact that they hand over the task of administering radiation therapy, which is most important part of the treatment, to unskilled ward boys. These wardboys not only work on Cobalt Machine but also prepare patient’s treatment schedule.

Though, the hospital administration denies such activity, the ‘ Free Press’ has explicit video footage showing a ward- boy working in the Cobalt Machine Ward.

Hospital sources said that a few senior doctors had appointed these ward boys and gave them training to handle the machine.

“ It is a serious issue and only a skilled professional should give the therapy to patients. If it’s given by a ward boy, then it’s beyond our imagination what the responsible doctors want to do,” a member of Radiological Society said.

He further said that only trained technicians should handle such machine because a little mistake could prove fatal for patient. “ It could damage even unaffected cells of the patient if not given properly or disturb proper schedule,” he added.

Insiders said that the hospital has three technicians but they use to leave around 3pm and there after, the therapy is administered by ward boys only.

In the video footage received by Free Press, a mouth- cancer patient of Pardeshipura also confirmed that he was given treatment by a ward boy. “ I am getting treatment under Dr Preeti Jain. She scheduled my treatment sittings and directed the technician about the matter.

However, the technician passed the directions to the ward- boy. This ward- boy has been giving me therapy since then and now only a few sittings are remaining,” he added.

Ward boys administering therapy for two years A ccording

According to insiders in the hospital, these ward boys have been administering radiation therapy to patients for two years. They said that five ward boys were appointed for the task but two of them retired about two years ago. “ Everyone in the hospital knows that ward boys have been giving radiation therapy, but when asked the doctors expressed their unawareness in the matter.
