Burhanpur (Madhya Pradesh): A major mishap was averted on Friday when an electric wire snapped and fell on the roofs of voting centre no. 222 and 223 under Khaknar Janpad panchayat of Burhanpur district panchayat.
Voters panicked, but acting promptly, the power department cut off the power supply, averting danger to the lives of more than 200 voters present at the polling centre at that time. Officials are trying to ascertain what led to the breaking of the cable.
The second phase of polling is underway in the region. In this phase, polling is being held to elect 90 panchayat members, 25 janpad panchayat members and four district panchayat members under Khaknar block.
People turned up in large numbers on Friday to cast their votes. In the first two hours of polling, 16.15 per cent voter turnout was recorded. In the Khaknar janpad area, 1,60,000 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise. An adequate number of security personnel have been deployed in the region.
