Indore : Continuing its drive against adulterated food products, Joint Team of Food and Drug Administration and Indore Municipal Corporation, on Thursday seized 2000 kg of ‘adulterated’ mawa from a bus of Baba Travels from Pipliyahana Square. The bus was coming from Ahmedabad and was unloading the mawa to supply it to nearby cities.
However, the manufacturing firm in Ahmedabad informed the officials that they have product approval from Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) but they couldn’t produce the documents till late evening.
“As part of our action against adulterated food, we checked some buses at Navlakha Bus Stand at around 8 am and also got a tip off of adulterated mawa unloading at Pipliyahana,” Senior Food Safety Officer Manish Swami said.
He said that at Pipliyahana, they seized packed mawa sealed in gunny bags with the names—Bansi Mawa, Ambika Mawa and Jai Sri Krishna Mawa mentioned on them.
“It was around 2000 kg of mawa worth Rs 4.8 lakh as per the market rate and was supplied at the rate of around Rs 4 lakh in the city. We have collected the samples and sent them for testing to the laboratory,” Swami said.
He added that they will lodge a case if the manufacturer and the receiver failed to produce the requisite documents. The mawa was ordered by Amit Jain and Prakash Rajani and was going to be supplied to Harda and Barwani.
It is to be noted that about 1000 kg of mawa was recovered from the bus last year as well.
Such mawa is not used in city, say traders
According to the department officials, during preliminary test, it was found that the seized mawa was made of milk powder, vanaspati ghee and sugar. It is generally used to make cheap sweets.
Meanwhile, city traders said that the mawa is not used in the city and supplied to other nearby smaller towns. Kamal Sharma of Sharma Mawa Bhandar said that such mawa is not used by any trader in the city and basically supplied to other places.
