Kolkata: New political tussle started between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party over the review meeting of Cyclone Yaas.
According to state secretariat sources, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee got jittery due to the presence of leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari in the meeting following which she had sought separate one-on-one meeting with the Prime Minister at Kalaikunda.
According to West Bengal state secretariat sources, despite seeking permission for a separate meeting, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was asked to wait for at least half an hour before she could handover the primary report of the devastation to the Prime Minister.
While speaking with the District Magistrates and the Superintendent of Police at Digha, Mamata Banerjee said that she had asked for a 20 thousand crore rupees package for Digha and Sunderban Development plans.
“Though I have submitted the report and asked him for 20 thousand crore rupees for Digha and Sunderban development plans, I am not sure whether we will get it,” stated Mamata.
Following this act of the TMC Supremo, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who welcomed the Prime Minister at Kalaikunda took to Twitter and slammed the TMC Supremo.
“At the Review Meet by PM #CycloneYaas to assess damage caused. CM and officials @MamataOfficial did not participate. Such boycott bot in consonance with constitution and federalism. Certainly by such actions neither public interest nor interest of state has been served,” wrote the Governor.
Countering the Governor, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee also took to social media and asked the reason for Suvendu's presence in the review meeting.
BJP MLA and Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari said that in these trying times the TMC supremo should forget her ego and should allow the Centre and the state to work together to curb the destruction brought by Cyclone Yaas.
Mamata Banerjee’s absence from the meeting also brought criticism from several BJP central leaders, who also took to Twitter and slammed the West Bengal Chief Minister.
Talking to Free Press Journal, poll analyst Biswanath Chakraborty stated that the absence of the Chief Minister gives the hint that in West Bengal ‘opposition free’ politics is still continuing.
“Parliamentary democracy suggests the presence of opposition. But in West Bengal since the Left Front regime West Bengal is witnessing opposition-free politics. Today’s act of the TMC supremo also hinted towards the same,” said Biswanath.
