Hyderabad: WhatsApp is set to roll out a new feature for Android users, allowing them to answer video calls without turning on their selfie camera. This update aims to enhance privacy and help prevent video call scams and sextortion attempts.
Currently, WhatsApp automatically activates the front camera when a video call is picked up, even from unknown numbers, leaving users with no option to disable it. While this may not be a concern for many, there are situations where users may prefer not to appear on camera. The new functionality, currently in the Android beta version, will offer greater control and privacy during video calls.
WhatsApp to Introduce 'Turn Off Video' Option for Incoming Calls
According to Android Authority, WhatsApp is testing a new feature in its beta version 2.25.7.3 for Android, allowing users to disable their camera before answering video calls.
A new "Turn off your video" button appears when receiving a call, giving users the choice to pick up in voice-only mode. Currently, this feature is not publicly available and can only be accessed through modifications in the beta version.
The latest report suggests that WhatsApp will let users turn their camera on or off during a video call using a "Turn on your camera" prompt.
Other New Features in Development
Currently, WhatsApp's stable version requires users to answer the call before disabling video. In addition, WhatsApp is working on several new features for Android users, including UPI Lite support for seamless PIN-free transactions and a revamped Meta AI chatbot with automatic voice mode and prompt-based interactions.
