Kolkata, June 9: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and Bengali actor Nusrat Jahan on Wednesday claimed her marriage with her husband Nikhil Jain to be ‘invalid’ and also claimed that her separation happened long back but she didn’t make it public.
Notably, two years back in June 2019, Nusrat made a destination marriage with businessman Nikhil Jain in Turkey.
In a statement Nusrat said, “Being on foreign land, as per Turkish Marriage Regulation, ceremony is invalid. It was an interfaith marriage, it requires validation under Special Marriage Act in India which didn't happen. As per court of Law, it’s not marriage but relationship or live-in relationship.”
Claiming that she will soon register a police complaint as according to the Trinamool Congress MP family members of Nikhil had held all her jewellery.
“Question of divorce doesn’t arise as it was a live-in relationship. From day one I have taken care of my sister’s education and took care of my family with my own money. Nikhil used my bank accounts and his family member is illegally holding back my jewelry. By my hardwork I have created my identity and I won’t allow anyone to share the limelight,” further stated the statement.
Notably, post marriage, Nusrat Jahan had changed her name to Ruhi Jain and after she entered the Parliament sporting vermillion and mangalsutra, Muslim clerics had issued a fatwa against Nusrat and claimed that a Muslim can marry only a Muslim.
“After investigation, we got to know that she married into the Jain religion, Islam says that a Muslim can only marry a Muslim. Actors don’t care about religion,” Cleric Mufti Asad Wasmi was heard saying.
Nusrat again got into controversy after she visited ISCKON’s Rath Yatra in Kolkata along with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her hubby Nikhil.
Close aide of Nusrat then said that since she had married a Hindu she had converted to Hinduism.
However, Nikhil Jain refused to comment on the development and said that if needed he will speak at the court.
Incidentally, earlier this year speculations made it to the headlines that the TMC MP was eyeing actor-turned-BJP leader Yash Dasgupta.
However, Nusrat is a close aide of TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee and was among the 17 women to be fielded as candidate in 2019 Lok Sabha election and by almost three lakh votes, Nusrat became the MP of Bashirhat constituency.
