Kolkata: Three TMC workers, including a member of local gram panchayat, were shot dead on Thursday morning at Canning in South 24 Parganas
According to sources, Swapan Majhi, Trinamool member of Gopalpur gram panchayat along with two booth presidents Bhutnath Pramanik and Jhantu Haldar were killed by unidentified people dressed as farmers.
The sources also said that the miscreants dressed as farmers were hidden in the field and while the three TMC workers were on their way to attend a meeting of TMC’s Martyr’s Day programme on July 21 was shot dead. The miscreants also tried to behead the dead TMC workers.
A team of district police and CID have reached the spot and are examining the area. The SP said though no one is arrested but search is on for the miscreants and the motive behind the murder is also yet to be ascertained.
Several shells of bullets and a bomb were found on the spot.
No sooner did the killing happen than the political slugfest started between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that the killing was due to ‘infighting’ within TMC.
“It is a fallout of their infighting. The West Bengal Police are busy erecting a watch tower outside CM Mamata Banerjee’s residence. Hence, the law and order situation of the state is getting worse,” said Adhikari.
TMC state general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that BJP is trying to ‘disrupt’ the peace of the state.
Congress and CPI (M) also slammed TMC for ‘violence’ ahead of the Panchayat election scheduled next year.
However, TMC national secretary Abhishek Banerjee condoled the death of the party cadres.
