Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday had suspended 12 doctors including medical superintendents and six postgraduate trainee doctors over medical negligence that caused a saline death incident in Midnapore Medical College and Hospital.

According to the Chief Minister, it was negligence of the trainee doctors that led to the death of a pregnant woman and landed four others in critical condition by giving them spurious saline from West Bengal pharmaceuticals.

“I have heard that out of three women who are admitted in SSKM, one is still critical and the rest are improving. The CID team will investigate the 12 suspended doctors. I have also heard that one doctor who was on duty conducted operations in private hospital at the same time,” mentioned Mamata.

The state government had also announced Rs. 5 lakhs compensation to the family of the deceased and mentioned that she is ready to give a job as well if anyone is willing to do so.

Notably, a new born baby on Thursday died, whose mother was also given the spurious saline initially. The father of the baby demanded a CBI probe and said that his wife is still alive as the quantity of the saline that was administered was less.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also instructed to install CCTV cameras till the doors of the operation theatres of the government hospitals.

Meanwhile, the division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya of Calcutta High Court had also instructed the state to ban the saline manufactured by Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals and asked the state government to compensate to the family members of those who are affected due to the spurious saline.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited the house of the patient who died due to the spurious saline.
