A police constable in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur has been suspended after a viral video allegedly showed him assaulting a woman during a routine checking drive outside the Sureri police station.
The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday afternoon when police personnel stopped a youth riding a motorcycle along with a woman seated behind him for inspection. According to eyewitnesses, an argument broke out between the youth and the police over the checking.
During the altercation, the woman allegedly began recording the incident on her phone. At this point, a constable is accused of grabbing her by the neck, throwing her to the ground, and physically assaulting her.
The viral video shows the man accompanying the woman attempting to intervene and de-escalate the situation. He can also be heard questioning the police, asking why he was fined and demanding the constable’s name. The incident led to chaos at the spot as onlookers gathered.
After the video spread rapidly on social media, the matter drew widespread attention, prompting swift action from the authorities. Kunwar Anupam Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, took cognisance of the incident and ordered the immediate suspension of the accused constable.
Officials have also directed a detailed inquiry into the matter. Police authorities stated that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
