Lucknow: On May 27, marking World Emergency Medicine Day, Uttar Pradesh will host a mass CPR and first aid training session at Medanta Hospital, Shaheed Path, Lucknow. The event is part of a nationwide campaign spearheaded by the Society of Acute Care, Trauma, and Emergency Medicine (SACTEM) in collaboration with Rapido, a bike taxi platform.

The initiative will train over 1,200 Rapido Captains across the state in CPR and basic emergency response techniques, aiming to create a network of on-road first responders. Organizers cite the lack of timely first aid as a key factor behind India’s alarming rate of over 1.5 lakh road accident deaths each year, according to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways data.

Medical professionals and emergency experts from 16 states are scheduled to participate in the day-long session. According to SACTEM, the campaign’s motto—“One Mission, One Day, One Nation”—emphasizes synchronized nationwide action to build local capacity in emergency care.

Rapido Captains, due to their presence on roads and frequent interaction with the public, are being positioned as critical first responders. The campaign will also reinforce previously held CPR sessions in schools and police training institutes across the state. Dr. Lokendra Gupta, founder of SACTEM, said the training aims to equip citizens to act during the golden minutes following trauma.

Emphasis will be placed on practical skills that can reduce fatalities before professional medical help arrives.
