Uttar Pradesh’s criminal justice system has seen a remarkable push toward efficiency and accountability through ‘Operation Conviction,’ a focused campaign aimed at strengthening the prosecution of criminal cases. Since its launch on July 1, 2023, the initiative has resulted in the conviction of 97,158 criminals as of mid-June 2025.

According to ADG Prosecution Deepesh Juneja, out of 1,14,029 identified cases, 74,388 have been disposed of so far, with successful convictions in 69,422. This effort reflects a larger shift toward prioritizing not just arrests but ensuring that justice is delivered swiftly through the courts. Of the total convictions, 68 individuals were awarded the death penalty, while 8,172 were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Another 1,453 received jail terms exceeding 20 years, and 87,465 were sentenced to up to 20 years. The campaign has emphasized decisive action in serious and organized crimes.

In a focused crackdown on notorious criminals, convictions were secured in 272 cases involving the top 10 most-wanted offenders. Of the 395 accused, 29 were sentenced, including 69 individuals identified as mafias. The drive also achieved significant success in cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act which resulted in 17 death sentences and 619 life terms were issued to convicts in these sensitive cases.

Data shows that on average, 143 identified cases are resolved and 187 criminals convicted every working day, highlighting the campaign’s strong operational momentum. By building robust prosecution strategies and leveraging fast-track courts, ‘Operation Conviction’ has helped ensure that legal action results in meaningful outcomes. The initiative stands out for its focus on impactful enforcement rather than symbolic arrests, offering a model for justice delivery that prioritizes both speed and integrity.
