Prayagraj Police on Thursday arrested Amit Kumar Jha (27), a resident of Baro Khejuria of Magra Police Station in West Bengal's Hooghly district, for recording and uploading videos of women bathing and changing clothes during the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj.
According to police, the accused was apprehended today by the Cyber Crime Police Station team of Prayagraj Commissionerate. The accused has been booked under sections 296/79 of the BNS and sections 66/66/67/670/74 of the IT Act.
Police recovered an Android mobile phone from his possession, which was allegedly used to record and upload the offensive content.
According to police, the accused, during interrogation, admitted that he had uploaded the videos on YouTube to increase his social media followers, with the intention of monetizing his channel to generate income.
The arrest comes days after a section of media reported that objectionable videos of women bathing at the Kumbh are being recorded and sold on Telegram channels and being shared on other online platforms to earn money.
Last week, reacting to a report by Aaj Tak, DIG Kumbh Vaibhav Krishna had instructed police action into the case.
