Kolkata: A delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs met President Droupadi Murmu urging her to expedite the Aparajita Women and Child Bill 2024, which was sent to her by Governor CV Ananda Bose on September 6.

After meeting with the President, TMC Kolkata (Uttar)’s MP Sudip Bandhopadhyay said that the President has heard everything patiently.

“On September 3, in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly the bill was passed and even the opposition party gave their affirmation in passing the bill. The Governor CV Ananda Bose has kept the bill reserved for President’s consideration. She said she will look into the matter,” said Bandhopadhyay.

In Aparajita Women and Child Bill 2024, it seeks capital punishments for rape convicts and lifetime imprisonment for other perpetrators.

Notably, apart from Bandhopadhyay, Derek O’ Brien, Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal, Sayoni Ghosh, June Maliah were also there in the delegation.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya said that the Aparajita bill is an ‘eyewash’.

“There is a Nirbhaya bill. This Aparajita bill we support but its just an eye wash as we have all seen how the state administration wiped all the evidences in the recent RG Kar rape and murder incident,” stated Bhattacharya.
