Chennai: A fresh row has erupted in Tamil Nadu with Chief Minister M K Stalin accusing Governor R N Ravi of holding up a Bill to establish a university in memory of DMK stalwart and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Thanjavur district.
The Chief Minister charged the Governor has not changed despite the Supreme Court’s recent landmark verdict prescribing time frame for those holding gubernatorial offices to clear Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly.
At a Government function in Thanjavur on Monday, Stalin said the Assembly had unanimously adopted a Bill to establish the Kalaignar University (Karunanidhi was hailed by his supporters as ‘Kalaignar’ – artiste). However, even after the passing of 40 days, the Governor had not granted assent for the same. The Government had sent several reminders to Raj Bhavan, he added.
Stalin said the Governor has not granted an appointment to the Higher Education Minister, who wanted to take up the issue of the pendency of the Bill.
“If the Governor had granted assent for the Bill, today the foundation stone for the new university could have been laid by me. We shall wait patiently. If we run out of patience, then we will force the Governor to give in,” the Chief Minister declared.
