Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday said he would hold discussions with Chief Ministers of other [non-BJP ruled] States on the Presidential Reference to the Supreme Court under Article 143 of the Constitution on the timelines set for Governors/President to act on Bills referred to them. Thereafter, he would decide on a course of action.

Interacting with journalists in the Nilgiris, Stalin said he had issued a detailed response to the “overreach” of the Union Government in making the Presidential Reference on the issue. The Supreme Court had last month while deciding on the Tamil Nadu case, granted deemed assent to 10 Bills on which action was delayed by Governor R N Ravi and set a time frame for the President and Governor to act on Bills referred to them under Article 200 of the Constitution. Prior to this, there was no deadline for the two Constitutional heads of states to take a decision on Bills passed by lawmakers.

Asked about the prospects for the DMK in the next year’s Assembly elections, Stalin said he was confident of his party’s victory not just in 2026 but also in 2031 and 2036 as well and that the ‘Dravida Model’ Government would continue to be in place.
