New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday cancelled the bail granted to former promoter of Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL) Dheeraj Wadhawan, accused in a case of bank loan misappropriation and cheating to the tune of Rs34,000 crore, as reported by legal portal Live Law.

A bench comprising Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma passed the order against the Delhi High Court's order, which had granted bail to Wadhawan on medical grounds in September 2024. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had challenged the grant of bail.

In May this year, the court constituted a medical board comprising the superintendent of grant government medical college and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals to determine his present health conditions. After assessing the report, the bench found that the accused does not require any medical treatment as of now, and therefore, the bail was cancelled and he is ordered to surrender within two weeks.

Before the high court, Wadhawan had contended that he suffers from multiple comorbidities and chronic ailments including ischemic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, fluctuating serum creatinine levels, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity etc. He had stated before the high court that during his judicial custody since April 26, 2020 he had visited the hospital about 50 times and had undergone around eight surgeries.

The Wadhawan brothers – Kapil and Dheeraj – were arrested in this case in July 2022.

The agency filed a chargesheet in October 2022 following which a court took its cognisance.

The FIR was registered on a complaint made by the Union Bank of India, which alleged DHFL, its then chairman-cum-managing director Kapil Wadhawan, then director Dheeraj Wadhawan and other accused entered into a criminal conspiracy to cheat the consortium of 17 banks led by Union Bank of India.
