Kochi: Just days after the drubbing it got in the Lok Sabha polls, the CPM in Kerala is caught in two major embarrassments. A messy suicide and rape have left he usually vociferous party leaders both stunned and speechless.
In the first case, a Dubai returned builder committed suicide near Kannur as the local municipality governed by the CPM went out of its way in denying him permission to open a high-end auditorium in his home town.
Parayil Sajan, 49, MD of Partha Builders, had come to Kerala to serve the state and had spent Rs 15 crore to build an auditorium. But the CPM-ruled Anthoor Municipality allegedly denied ownership certificate on flimsy grounds and made him run from pillar to post.
What broke his will was the challenge thrown by municipal chairperson PK Shyamala (wife of CPM central committee member MV Govindan) that she would not give a certificate come what may.
Relatives of Sajan said that he was depressed when Shyamala reportedly told him that he could go to the end of the world, but will never get a certificate. In his suicide note, Sajan blamed Shyamala and her two engineers.
An inspection was conducted by the town planning officer and work was allowed to continue. Sajan completed it and approached the municipality for the certificate, but officers delayed the process.
Sajan’s friends said he was thoroughly disappointed with the attitude of the municipal officers. He told them there was no option for him but to commit suicide if he was not able to open the auditorium.
The suicide rocked the State Assembly with Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala saying on the one hand Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan goes abroad trying to attract industrialists to Kerala and, on the other, investors are committing suicide due to the party’s attitude.
The other issue that has embarrassed is the rape charge against Binoy Kodiyeri, son of the powerful Kerala CPM secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, also the left hand man of Pinarayi.
A 33-year-old Mumbai woman who hails from Bihar has filed rape and cheating charges against Binoy and said she had hard and incontrovertible proof to show that Binoy Kodiyeri had fathered a love child who is now 8 years.
The woman said she is willing to undertake a DNA test to prove it. The boy''s birth certificate and passport, both, mention Binoy Vinodini Balakrishnan alias Binoy Balakrishnan Kodiyeri in the father''s name column.
The woman has reportedly submitted several documents, photos to Oshiwara police as evidence of her close ties with Binoy.
She has also given her bank statements between 2010 and 2015 which showed that Binoy had electronically transferred Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh every month during this period to her as maintenance.
In her FIR, the woman alleged that Binoy sexually exploited her for several years on the promise of marriage.
Embarrassed CPM leaders maintain that the case has nothing to do with the party. "A case against an individual needs to be defended by him," party''s Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat said in New Delhi.
The usually ready-to-shoot CPM Kerala secretary has vanished and the party has asked its spokespersons to keep away from TV debates on the issue.
