This monsoon season is proving to be a blessing for Rajasthan, as the desert state has received its average rainfall much before the end of the rainy season.
According to official data, the state has recorded 436.7 mm of rainfall from June 1 to August 14, surpassing the average monsoon rainfall of 435.6 mm, which is normally expected between June 1 and September 30.
Although August has so far remained weak, with just 26.4 mm of rain in the first 14 days, July witnessed the highest rainfall in the last 69 years. The state received a total of 285 mm of rain in July. The previous record was 308 mm in July 1956.
The early onset of the monsoon in the country and its timely entry into Rajasthan helped the state overcome the parched conditions of the scorching summer. This year, the monsoon arrived in Rajasthan a week earlier than usual and remained active until the first week of August, bringing nearly one and a half months of continuous rainfall.
Due to heavy downpours in Sawai Madhopur, flood-like conditions prevailed for a few days. Nearby districts also faced similar situations due to excessive rainfall.
By August 14, 19 districts of the state had already received their full quota of rain. These include Ajmer, Baran, Bhilwara, Bundi, Dausa, Dholpur, Jaipur, Jhunjhunu, Karauli, Kota, Sawai Madhopur, Sikar, Tonk, Churu, Hanumangarh, Jodhpur, Nagaur, Pali, and Ganganagar.
Director of the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur, Radheshyam Sharma, said that the monsoon will remain active in the state for the next two weeks, i.e., until August 28.
Farmers are delighted with the good monsoon season, as 94 percent of Kharif crop sowing has already been completed, and the target is likely to be surpassed within a week or two.
