Rajasthan BJP MLA Kanwarlal Meena, who was sentenced to three years in a 20-year-old case involving pointing a gun at an SDM, has been disqualified from the membership of the Legislative Assembly. The Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha issued a notification regarding this on Friday.

Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani stated that Kanwarlal Meena, the MLA from Anta, has been disqualified from the date of his conviction under Article 191(1)(e) of the Indian Constitution, read with Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. He informed that, as a result, one seat in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly has become vacant.

The decision was taken after seeking the legal opinion of the Advocate General.

"On Friday at 10:30 am, after receiving the legal opinion of the Advocate General, the membership of Kanwarlal Meena was disqualified. The decision is in accordance with the law," said Devnani.

Kanwarlal Meena had surrendered in the trial court two days ago, following the directions of the Supreme Court, which had rejected his petition seeking suspension of the sentence. However, Meena has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court, which is currently pending hearing.
