City SP (Central) Deeksha said that police received information that businessman Gopal Khemka, had been shot dead in the south area of Gandhi Maidan. She said that the crime scene had been secured as one bullet and one shell had been recovered from the spot. A thorough investigation has been launched in this connection, she added.

Khemka's brother, Shankar Khemka, accused police officers of reaching the spot nearly three hours after the incident. He said that his brother - who was also a director of the Bankipore Club - was driving back home. He said that criminals fired on him as he stepped out of his car at 11:40 pm. Shankar alleged that it was not until 2:30 am that police reached the scene. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident by taking all angles into consideration.

In 2018, Gopal Khemka's son, Gunjan Khemka (38), was also killed in broad daylight when an unidentified bike-borne assailant opened fire when he was going to step out of his car in front of his cotton factory in Vaishali district. RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari alleged that 'jungle raj' was prevailing in the state.

Senior Congress leader and spokesperson Rajesh Rathore attacked the state government over the incident and also demanded from chief minister to hand over the portfolio of home department, which he has been holding since long, to a young leader. Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan aka Pappu Yadav, who visited the spot, demanded an explanation from the state government over the incident.
