PM Memorial (Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya) in New Delhi has officially written to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and asked him to return letter written by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, which the memorial says are in Sonia Gandhi's possession, India Today reported on Monday (December 16). It has been reported that the letters include those written by Nehru to Edwina Mountbatten and Albert Einstein.
The latest letter written to Rahul Gandhi has followed a similar one written to Sonia Gandhi in the month of September.
In the letter written to Rahul Gandhi, Prime Ministers' Museum and Library (PMML) Rizwan Kadri has asked him to help retrieve the personal letters (Or their photo/digital copies) written by Nehru which are now in possession of Sonia Gandhi.
These letters, steeped in their historical significance were given to Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (now PMML) in 1971. The letters were reportedly taken by Sonia Gandhi in 2008. The documents filled 51 carton boxes.
In his letter, Kadri has reportedly said that the letters in possession of Sonia Gandhi had great historical significance and if they are made available to the scholars and the public, it would enable them to shed light on an important period in Indian history.
It is often held, without unequivocal substantiation that can be proved in court of law beyond reasonable doubt, that ties between Nehru and Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of last viceroy of India, did not fully conform to the agreed protocols of diplomatic communication when an interpretation is made in strictest manner.
In its report, India Today said that the letters in possession of Sonia Gandhi also include those written by Nehru to leaders like Jayprakash Narayan, Aruna Asaf Ali, Govind Ballabh Pant and others.
BJP Reacts
BJP wasted no time in jumping into the issue. Party's digita czar Amit Malviya took to social media platform X (formely Twitter) and wondered why, what he called was, 'censorship' needed for letters Nehru wrote to Edwina Mountbatten.
There was no immediate response from either Rahul Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi when the story broke.
