New Delhi: Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and senior advocate HS Phoolka on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ending a seven-year hiatus from active politics. His joining is seen as a major boost to the Punjab unit of the BJP.
He joined at the BJP’s Delhi headquarters in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and the party's National General Secretary Tarun Chugh.
Phoolka is a distinguished lawyer in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. He led the fight for justice for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Political Journey
Phoolka entered politics in 2014. He contested the Lok Sabha elections on an AAP ticket from Ludhiana. He later won the Dakha seat in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections and briefly served as the Leader of the Opposition in the state.
However, he took a break from active political duties in 2017, resigning his post to ensure his legal work for the riot victims remained uncompromised. He eventually resigned as an MLA in 2018 and quit the AAP in early 2019.
