New Delhi: A 23-year-old para-medical student from Uttarakand, who was travelling in a bus with her male friend, was allegedly gang-raped inside the vehicle and then thrown out of it, police said today.

The male friend, who is an engineer and currently working in a firm, was also attacked and thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur in south Delhi late last night.

The girl was allegedly gang-raped in the bus and her friend brutally assaulted when they were going to Dwarka from Munirka here last night. They were then thrown out of the bus near Mahipalpur flyover, police said.

After they raised an alarm, both were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre from where the girl was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. Her condition is stated to be critical.

A case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar Police Station.

The girl, who studies in a college in Dehra Dun, is in the capital for her internship.

Reacting to the incident, NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma said, “Such incidents are increasing in Delhi. Police and government should be really alert….We will get an inquiry done and will also enquire with police as to what action has been taken so far.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the permit of the bus has been cancelled by the transport department and necessary action would be taken to ensure such incidents don’t happen in the future.

“I have been told by transport department that their licence has been canncelled. We will take all the necessary mesures to ensure that such incidents don’t happen,” she said.

Describing the incident as ‘shocking’, Delhi Women and Child Development Minister Kiran Walia said that government would seriously work on installing CCTV cameras inside the buses.

“This is shocking incident. I hope that the guilty are punished for the henious crime,” she said.

Accusing the Delhi government of handling the law and order matter “carelessly”, BJP spokesperson Muqhtar Abbas Naqvi said in Delhi such incidents take place regularly but they are neither taken seriously by the Home Ministry nor by the police.

“This incident will be replaced with another incident after few days. I believe that Delhi’s law and order and security issues are handled carelessly by the government,” Naqvi said.

These collective voices will form a crisp and constructive set of recommendations developed using a working group that will work on the sidelines of the Summit and the final Communiqué will be handed over to the Commonwealth Secretariat at the Valedictory session on 15th December.
