New Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said that the new Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021 are empowering and protecting users interests on internet. He further observed that the guidelines will ensure safer & responsible social media ecosystem in the country.

The new minister reviewed implementation and compliance of the new IT rules with Minister of State for Electronics & technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

New IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shot off a warning to Twitter on Thursday, July 8, telling the social media giant "the law of the land is supreme" and warning it to follow the rules.

On a question that Twitter was not adhering to IT rules, he said whosoever lives and works in India will have to abide by the rules of the country.

The microblogging site has been in head to head with the central government over new IT rules.

Earlier in June, case was filed against Twitter in Ghaziabad in connection with tweets on the alleged assault on a Muslim man.

In a series of run-ins with Twitter, the government had also asked the site to remove the “manipulated media” tag from tweets posted by several BJP leaders on an alleged Congress “toolkit”.
