NDMA releases list of do's and don’ts before, during and after thunderstorms and dust storms

There is often not much idea about how one should be prepared if a thunderstorm or sand storm is approaching suddenly. As monsoons have already hit many parts of the country, thunderstorms and dust storms are likely to occur. In a bid to protect from such calamities, National Disaster Management Authority, Govt of India has issued a guide on do's and dont's for thunderstorms and dust storms.

The advisory contains a list on how to prepare for thunderstorm/dust storm, what to follow when comes, how prepare oneself post the storms among others.

What to do before the storm?

  1. Prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival

  2. Secure your house. carry out repairs don't leave sharp objects loose

  3. Secure outside objects that could blow away and cause damage

  4. Remove rotting trees/broken branches that could fall and cause injury or damage

  5. Listen to radio, watch TV or read newspapers for weather updates and warnings

What to do during the storm?

  1. Keep a watch on local weather updates and warnings

  2. Try to stay indoors stay off verandas

  3. Unplug all electrical equipment

  4. Don't use corded telephones

  5. Don't touch plumbing and metal pipes. Do not use running water

  6. Stay away from structures with tin roofs/metal sheeting

  7. Don't take shelter near/under trees

  8. Stay put if you are inside a car/bus/covered vehicle

  9. Don't use metallic objects stay away from power/telephone lines

  10. Get out of water- pools lakes, small boats on water bodies and take safe shelter immediately

What to do after the storm?

  1. Stay away from storm-damaged areas

  2. Listen to local radio/TV stations for updated information or instructions on weather and traffic updates

  3. Help children, women elderly and differently-abled

  4. Stay away from fallen trees/power lines and report them to nearest tehsil/district head quarters
