Rae Bareli: Modern Coach Factory has achieved its highest-ever annual production, manufacturing 2,126 coaches in the financial year 2025-26, underlining its rapid growth as one of India’s most advanced passenger coach manufacturing units.

The factory, located in Lalganj in Rae Bareli district of Uttar Pradesh, has shown a steady rise in output following the Covid period. In the previous financial year 2024-25, it had produced 2,025 coaches, and the latest figures mark an increase of around 5 per cent.

Officials said the MCF, set up in 2007 at Lalganj, about 85 km from Lucknow on the Kanpur-Rae Bareli road, was built at a cost of Rs 3,192 crore with an initial annual production capacity of 1,000 coaches. Over the years, it has significantly scaled up operations to emerge as a key manufacturing hub for Indian Railways.

The factory rolled out its first fully in-house coach in August 2014. Since then, production has witnessed a sharp rise from just 140 coaches in 2014-15 to over 2,000 annually in recent years, culminating in the current record output.

A major highlight of the year is the successful completion of MCF’s first Vande Bharat trainset, reflecting its growing capability in producing modern and high-speed train coaches. The total production basket includes a wide range of rolling stock such as Vande Bharat, MEMU, Deen Dayalu, sleeper coaches, 3-tier economy, AC 3-tier, general chair cars, power cars, 2-tier coaches, Divyangjan-friendly coaches, Tejas coaches, parcel vans and AC chair cars.

In addition, the factory has manufactured several other specialised coaches over the years, including Humsafar, Antyodaya, Bharat Gaurav, brake vans, parcel vans, track recording cars, economy coaches, demo locomotives and hold coaches for export to Mozambique.

MCF also registered record production in key components. It manufactured 2,168 coach set bogies, 2,205 coach shell assemblies and 2,182 wheel sets during the year. In forged wheel production, the factory produced 62,938 wheels against a target of 50,000, recording a 54 per cent increase over the previous year. Of these, 59,161 finished wheels successfully cleared quality checks, marking a 77 per cent rise.
