Manipur CM N Biren Singh handed over the letter of resignation from the post of Chief Minister to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday.
N Biren Singh's resignation comes ahead of the Budget session in the state assembly.
Before submitting his resignation to the Governor, N Biren Singh had an over two-hour-long meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda today in Delhi.
According to reports, N Biren Singh has been given the responsibility to lead the state government until a new CM takes charge.
In his resignation letter to the Governor, N Biren Singh has expressed his deep gratitude to the Central government for its timely interventions, developmental initiatives, and implementation of various projects aimed at safeguarding the interests of the people of Manipur. He urged the Centre to maintain its commitment to the state's welfare and continue supporting key initiatives.
There had been a long-standing demand for Singh's resignation after the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities began in May 2023. According to reports, Singh had decided to step down from his post in July 2023; however, he was forced to withdraw his resignation following protests from his supporters.
Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra on Friday said that the party would move a no-confidence motion against the N Biren Singh government in the state assembly.
Congress Party's reaction on Biren Singh's resignation
Shorty after N Biren Singh submitted his resignation to the Governor, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded stating "The CM's resignation was belated."
In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh said, "The Congress was all set to move a no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers in the Manipur Assembly tomorrow. Sensing the climate, the Manipur CM has just resigned. This was a demand that the Congress has been making since early May 2023, when Manipur erupted."
"The CM's resignation was belated. The people of Manipur now await a visit by our Frequent Flier PM who is off to France and the USA now - and who has found neither the time nor the inclination to go to Manipur these past twenty months," he added.
In the 60-member Manipur Assembly, Congress holds five MLAs, while the NPP, another opposition party, has seven legislators. The BJP, with 32 MLAs, is supported by five MLAs from the Naga People's Front and six from the JD(U). Additionally, there are three Independent MLAs and two legislators from the Kuki Peoples' Alliance.
