An angry mob vandalised and set fire to the house of the BJP Minority Morcha's state president, Askar Ali Makakmayum, in Manipur's Thoubal district on Sunday for supporting the new Waqf law.

A video of Askar Ali's burning house has surfaced on social media.

Following the incident, Askar Ali apologised on social media and urged the central government to withdraw the new Waqf law.

In his Facebook post, he wrote, "Please do not politicise this issue. If anything I said has hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise. I request the central government to withdraw this law."

In the post, he also tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and BJP Minority Morcha's national president Jamal Siddiqui.

So far, six petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the new Waqf law. The latest petition was filed by Kerala Sunni Muslim organisation Kerala Jamiat Ulama. Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has announced nationwide protests starting April 11.
