Kolkata: Amidst the demand for suspension of Mahua Moitra by the BJP, the TMC MP on Wednesday unfollowed the official Twitter handle of party and said that people should visit Tarapith to see what food and drink are offered to the deity.

“For me, Goddess Kali is a meat-eating and alcohol-accepting goddess. And if you go to Tarapith (a major Shakti peeth in West Bengal’s Birbhum district), you will see sadhus smoking. That is the version of Kali people worship (there). I, within Hinduism, being a Kali worshipper, have the right to imagine Kali in that way, that is my freedom,” Mahua had said in the media conclave.

Minutes after her comments, the party said it did not endorse them at all.

Taking to Twitter, Mahua said, “To all you sanghis - lying will NOT make you better Hindus. I NEVER backed any film or poster or mentioned the word smoking. Suggest you visit my Maa Kali in Tarapith to see what food & drink is offered as bhog. Joy Ma Tara.”

Till the time of reporting, the only person Mahua follows is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee said that Mahua should have been more ‘careful’ while commenting.

“Mahua is a responsible MP. She should have been more careful before commenting. Through tweets All India Trinamool Congress had made it clear that the party doesn’t endorse the comment of the MP,” said Chatterjee.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray also said that the party doesn’t ‘endorse’ the comment.

Meanwhile, slamming the comment of Mahua, BJP cadres across the state protested and lodged several FIRs.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that he would wait for 10 days and would see whether police are taking any action against TMC MP Mahua Moitra or else he will move the court.

“If Kolkata police respect the national emblem then they should take action against Mahua the way they are following up against suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma. If they don’t take action then we would move the court. Coming Saturday there will be Kali puja across the state and soon I will go to Krishnanagar (where Mahua is a MP) with Kali idol,” said Adhikari.

Apart from Bengal, FIR has been lodged against Mauha in other states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
