New Delhi: A man was arrested in Delhi’s Hauz Qazi area for allegedly raping his mother twice within ten days, telling her he was “punishing” her for supposed past conduct.

The case came to light after the elderly woman, accompanied by her younger daughter, filed a complaint at the Hauz Qazi police station on Friday, August 15.

Calls Demanding Divorce, Violence After Return

According to the complaint, the woman lived with her retired government employee husband, her son, the accused, and one daughter. Earlier in July, she had travelled to Saudi Arabia on a pilgrimage with her husband and younger daughter. While they were abroad, the son repeatedly telephoned his father, demanding that he divorce her. He alleged she had been unfaithful in the past when her husband travelled for work.

The family returned to Delhi on August 1. The victim told police that her son immediately turned violent. “He made me remove my burqa, locked me in a room and beat me up. He told my husband that he had spoilt me,” she said in her complaint, as cited by an officer. Fearing for her safety, she temporarily moved in with her elder daughter.

Repeated Assaults and Police Complaint

On August 11, the woman returned home. That evening, around 9:30 pm, the accused asked to speak to her in private. “He locked her in the room and raped her. He said that he was punishing her for her previous conduct even as she pleaded that she was his mother,” a police officer familiar with the investigation said.

Traumatised, the woman avoided reporting the assault immediately and began sleeping in her daughter’s room. However, in the early hours of 14 August, the accused allegedly entered again and raped her a second time.

The following day, she confided in her younger daughter, who encouraged her to approach police. A case was then registered under Section 64 (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the accused was arrested. Further investigation is currently underway.
