Kolkata Mothabari Hostage Case: 35 Arrested, Key Accused Held At Bagdogra Airport

A total of 35 people were arrested after seven judicial officers were held hostage in West Bengal’s Malda during voter list revision, officials said. Prime accused Mofakkerul Islam was nabbed by CID at Bagdogra Airport while allegedly fleeing. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar ordered strict action, while Mamata Banerjee blamed BJP for provocation.

Kolkata: A total of 35 people got arrested in the Mothabari incident on Friday where seven judicial officers, including three women, were held hostage for several hours during voter list revision work.

The prime accused Mofakkerul Islam, also got arrested by the state CID from Bagdogra Airport while he was about to flee to Bengaluru.

According to the sources, a warrant had been issued against Islam as he was absconding after the incident took place.

The sources also mentioned that the accused while being taken to Malda had claimed that the protests regarding removal of voters from the electoral roll would continue and that he would stand by the cause.

Notably, on Thursday night Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar pulled up the Malda superintendent of police and asked for strict action against those who are involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, the NIA team had reached Kolkata and had also visited Mothabari in Malda district.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for alleged provocation.

“The BJP loaned the accused from the AIMIM and brought him to Bengal from Mumbai. The state CID is still under my control and the state CID had arrested the main accused from Bagdogra airport,” said Mamata.

From the former IAS officers to poll analysts had condemned the incident.
