Kanpur: In an unexpected turn of events, a man from Kanpur Dehat’s Rasoolabad arranged the wedding of his wife to her lover after learning about their affair. The decision came after a panchayat was held in the village and the woman gave written consent to end her 15-year marriage. The wedding was conducted at a local temple with both police and villagers in attendance.

The man, Yogesh Tiwari, a 40-year-old labourer, had been married to Soni, 30, since May 2010. The couple has a 12-year-old son.

What Did the Panchayat Decide?

According to Bhagga Niwada village head Jai Chand, Soni had been involved in an “illicit relationship” with Vikas Dwivedi, a 35-year-old man from Kannauj. The affair led to repeated confrontations in the household, eventually prompting Soni to leave for her parental home.

On Monday, June 23, she returned to Yogesh’s home, and later that day, Vikas was also seen in the village. Alarmed, Yogesh called the police on emergency number 112. Though Vikas initially fled, Yogesh later asked him to return, saying he had accepted the reality of the situation.

A panchayat was soon convened. During the meeting, Soni submitted a written statement terminating her marriage with Yogesh and expressing her wish to marry Vikas. Yogesh, in turn, agreed to the proposal.

Temple Wedding Held In Police Presence

With all parties in agreement, Yogesh took the unusual step of organising his wife’s wedding. The ceremony was held at a temple near the Tisti police post. Local villagers and police personnel were present as witnesses. Yogesh also gave his consent for their son to live with his mother.

This incident comes after a series of similar cases were reported in Gonda and Sant Kabir Nagar, where men arranged their wives’ marriages to their respective lovers after discovering the affairs.

While many were stunned by Yogesh’s decision, others viewed it as a rare example of resolution in the face of personal betrayal.
