J&K govt bans Kashmir daily

New Delhi : The Jammu and Kashmir Government has banned “till further orders” the publication of Kashmir Reader, an English daily newspaper published from Srinagar since May 2012 with the motto ”Nothing but News,” accusing it of carrying material “which easily tends to incite acts of violence and disturb public peace and tranquility.”

The order banning the printing and publication of the daily with immediate effect was issued by the Srinagar district magistrate on Sunday, citing “credible inputs” for singling the daily for the harsh act as all other dailies came out in Srinagar on Monday as usual.

The collector banned the daily invoking powers under Section 144 CrPC. read with Section 3 of Newspapers Incitement of Offences Act, 1971 and Section 10 of Press and Publication Act.

“It has been observed that the contents published in the above newspaper is of such nature that can easily cause incitement of acts of violence and disturbance of public tranquility in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and Srinagar District in particular,” said the order issued as a precautionary measure “in the interest of prevention of this anticipated breach of public tranquility.
